Has anybody ever had there toenail hurt but haven't seen a actual ingrown toe nail?

Has anybody ever had there toenail hurt but haven't seen a actual ingrown toe nail? If so what did you do to get rid of the pain without losing the nail, like what over the counter creams or antibiotics did you use to completely rid of the pain that don't cause damage and is safe?
