I’m a healthy 70 yr. old facing Arthrex minimally invasive surgery. I live alone. Will I be able to manage on my own? How soon before I can walk my dog?

68 year old here, had the surgery in December, got a blood clot that almost killed me after 10 days. No prior clot problems. Be sure to get up and move after surgery.

he prescribed a regular aspirin, but the directions emphasized elevation and ice, which I did.

I actually had that surgery one week ago today was definitely able to get around with a walking shoe putting all the weight on my heel. But the first three days you definitely need to rest elevate an ice. I only got up for the bathroom. Pain was minimal …. Stop the Percocet after two days and went to Motrin.

I think you will need to hire a dog walker until you get out of the post-op shoe. You’ll be able to walk in the post-op shoe, but not take walks for exercise. Although if you have a little dog that just needs short little walks to go potty, you might be able to manage that. While you are walking in the post-op shoe, you are walking differently in that foot that in your other foot, so for me I found that my legs and hips got achy. I was stepping with normal flexion on one foot and flat on the other. So, no long walks!
