I’m about 3.5 months post op from my revision surgery (bunionectomy). My first surgery was in May 2025 and then had to have a revision in March 2026. I still have quite a bit of pain and discomfort when walking and was wondering if this is normal? I can’t compare to my previous surgery since it never healed properly before. I have an appointment with my doctor on Tuesday but was curious what other people’s experiences with it. Hoping to hear it gets better because I am super discouraged and have so much regret. Thank you!

I’m sorry to read that you’re experiencing such pain, Cassie. I know we each heal differently, at different rates, other factors can affect healing and that healing can take up to a full year post-op for most patients. I just wanted to share what my podiatric surgeon discussed with me pre-surgery both times: “By month 3, it’s normal to still have pain and discomfort but that pain and discomfort should be limited and a result of you being on your feet all day and/or after enjoying physical activities”. He also said that “You ought to be worried and call my office IF the pain is affecting your ability to walk/causing you to limp while walking”. *Did you receive any pt?* I hope your doctor is able to provide you with possible solutions at your upcoming appt.

thanks for that! I did do about 2 months of PT but decided to switch places because I feel like I wasn’t making any progress so I’m waiting to get in to a new place

Cassie Popp, you’re welcome! I hope the new locations therapist is able to assist you with creating and then implementing a great PCCP (patient-centered care plan). That’s what my therapist and I did last year. I not only thrived during pt. I benefited from and enjoyed it so much that I ended up surpassing my set goals. I’m looking forward to it this year. Best wishes to you in your recovery journey. I hope you enjoy and flourish with your new therapist.

I had newish pain at 3 months and was expecting to be back to normal but limping. I had to scale way back on activities and then slowly increase. My first therapist made me feel worse and I switched and it was like night and day! I LOVED my second one! It was very much a “trust the process” and “two steps forward one step back”. After a month, the limping was almost gone and by month 6 I was doing everything except the most extreme/intense sports (like surfing or climbing types). At 1 year I could do everything and was not thinking about my feet at all. I feel like I was where you were at (without the revision), thinking WHY is it getting worse and thinking it wasn’t normal. But my doctor and PT reassured me it was. And I was healing at the right pace. The x-rays showed bone was actually healing great, it was just soft tissues that needed to rebalance. And I had to stop overdoing it. lol I’d say just check with your doctor what they anticipate your new recovery timeline to be, and know some people take longer - and that’s very normal. My doctor initially said I’d be back to normal at 3 months, but it ended up taking longer. And it worked out just fine.
