There actually is a small incision lapiplasty procedure. Lapiplasty is a hardware system and method of fusing joint(s), specifically fusing the metatarsal-cuneiform joint. Fusing a joint can decrease your chance of recurrence. However, every procedure has pros and cons. Fusing means basically glueing two bones together and removing the cartilage/joint that was there: making two separate bones into one longer bone. The motion that previously occurred there will be distributed to other joints that could in turn wear out more quickly. Lapiplasty has been around for about 7 years (middle of 2014), so though the research is promising, the future is unknown a bit. If you compare fusing vertebrae in the spine, where the research shows you often get adjacent segment disease (the joints on either side or the fusion wear out more quickly) that would not be the best. So, time will tell. On one hand, possibly less chance of recurrence, and the ability to treat very large bunions effectively. On the other, you are taking away a joint that you were born with and arguably should be there, and possibly other foot joints wear out more quickly.

I’ve been reading that with MIS there is a higher chance that your bunion could come back compared to Lapiplasty. Is this true?

Thanks for your answer. I’ve been seriously considering getting my bunion fixed with MIS but have just recently discovered Lapiplasty. Intrigued by it but still would prefer MIS because of the quicker recovery and less invasive procedure.
Northwest surgery center The Lapidus procedure was introduced in 1930, so we've had plenty of opportunity to see the long-term results. "Lapiplasty" basically refers to a recent private company's 'kit' (tools and hardware) which are supposed to make it easier for less skilled surgeons to perform this operation with better results. Since both the Lapidus procedure and current lapiplasty make long incisions, I would love to see some references on "small incision lapiplasty". Thanks.
would I have this kind of surgery and does it aquire intubation or can you be awake cause I don't want to be put to sleep?
can I get a bunion removed without stitches and hardware?
I have now performed over 300 MIS bunion procedures with no recurrences! In my opinion the only reason to FUZE a joint (lapidoplasty) is for arthritis or instability at that joint.
at NWSC we have done over 1000 MIS bunion surgeries without the use of hardware the last three years! We have pioneered our techniques over 25 years ago.
Thank you for your response. I have an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon for an MIS consultation next month.
do they put you to sleep for MIS or no?
