Something strange just happened and I’m not sure how to describe it - I’m a just over a year past surgery and have been healing fine - I’m back to running and everything. My big toes are still partially numb and tonight as I was laying in bed one of my big toes started tensing, kind of like a cramp? The toe was raising and I couldn’t fully control it, I had to use my hand to flatten it, and it still kept trying to raise again, almost like it was possessed it didn’t hurt but felt like if I didn’t stop it, it would hurt. Has anyone had anything like that happen? My only recent change is new orthotics and wearing shoes more as a way to manage ankle arthritis, but those things have been very positive, so I don’t think they’re related. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

My big toe did that a couple times after surgery. I think it was the nerves still coming alive after the surgery. If your toe is still numb then you may have some nerve damage or nerves still trying to grow and come alive again.

After getting new orthotics yes, I have gotten cramps in my foot. If it continues, get the orthotics adjusted.

Those orthotics are likely keeping your foot from getting the exercise that it should from bending as you walk. You need to start strengthening your foot as the orthotics will continue to make it worse. Those things are so bad for the true health and strength of your foot

Could it be the tendon? Sounds like what happened to my nephews finger.

Yes!!

Yes it’s a cramp and I get them frequently when in bed and no weight is on my foot. Rub some magnesium oil (available on Amazon) on your feet before med and also take a magnesium supplement,

Ditto Several times recently - in the evening. Eight months after surgery

My big toe does that too and I can’t figure out why. I had my surgery in May last year. I rub a bit of magnesium oil over the top of my left foot. It’s helped a bit but not a great deal.

I have had orthotics for ages, this is just a new pair. My feet are so flat they lay on the ground, the orthotics keep me from having ankle pain when I run because otherwise I pronate really badly

Your toe and whole foot have a different alignment now that you've had surgery. You should be able to use your toe more effectively in walking and running. If the toe can press into the ground now in the correct direction and wasn't able to before, that may give you more ability to strengthen your arch and foot overall. You might want to consult with a PT. Make sure you get one who is knowledgeable about feet.

his was because he was always bending it, something to do with the sheath the tendon was in. I’d have a chat with your dr
