We just saw my sons Podiatrist yesterday, to have his nails trimmed, and check on his toenail fungus. He is 34 years old, and has Down Syndrome. He has a lift in one shoe, and plastic inserts in both. I wonder if that situation has contributed to his fungus.... He had a terrible case of Athlete's Foot, since last fall, that I, successfuly treated, with vinegar/water soaks, and Tinactin spray. We have been using Tolcylen, a topical medication, for 2 months, with no improvement. The tube, that can only be purchased from the doctor's office, for $50 (!!!), lasted 4 weeks, NOT the 6 months that the doctor suggested!!! We are on our 2nd tube, and probably our last! The Podiatrist said that just choosing to NOT treat the fungus would be okay. It's unsightly, but won't turn into any other health problems. I was considering the oral Lamisil, but am concerned about side effects, and potential liver damage. I happened to speak with a retired Podiatrist recently, and his advice was to take the oral Lamisil, after having a Liver Function test, before, during, and after the 3 month dosage. He said that that was the ONLY way to successfuly get rid of toe fungus. And, that in all his years of practicing Podiatry, he never had one patient that suffered liver damage. The current Podiatrist says that if he prescribes the oral Lamisil, my son would still need to also use the $50-a-small-tube Tolcylen... Hahaha! I'm just hoping for some testimonials....

Plastic, rubber or latex can cause the feet to sweat. So yes it may be contributing to the athletes foot. Take the insert and put a cotton footie over it backwards so that plastic so the plastic isnt against the foot. Also make sure he wears cotton or a natural fiber socks and leather shoes...leather allows the feet to breathe and helps prevent moisture.
I think u need to cut away as much of the infected nail as possible and clean around the nails. Soak in vinegar and water at least twice a week. Dry with hair dryer. And treat twice daily. Clean every time before treating. Sand the nails from top, front and sides. Before applying mediation. I currently use terbinafine hydrochloride but if that doesn’t work I will try monstat cream. Keep on trucking
I don't have any results to give however I am looking at urea cream with a fungal cream, preferably prescription. You apply it and cover it and it's supposed to take one to two weeks for the nail to soften and the fungus to be removed so that the cream can actually penetrate. If you're interested in the papers on it, let me know and I'll share it. I'm still researching but that's the way I'm going, I'm just trying to decide if I want to use an applicator afterwards or continue to use a cream and which one I want to ask my doctor to give me. It seems like the one I was looking at is about $50 as well. The cream can be purchased like on Amazon for I think 10 bucks or so.
I tried tea tree oil and prescription remedies. None of them worked or at least they didn’t work fast enough. I tried for four months each and saw no improvement. The only thing that worked was putting Vicks on it twice a day(once in the morning and once before I went to sleep). I kept socks on my feet after applying it. I went barefoot in the house, to make sure they got aired out for a few hours every day.
Look into fixing the gut . Yup, sugar feeds a lot of these issues . Consider yeast/candida overgrowth that presenting as fungus. Not a doc, but my opinion on the many articles I’ve read.

I’ve read that it can become systemic if not treated but not sure how true that is.
i'd use both lamisil and the topical. the longer you wait to treat, the worse it gets. when clipping his toenails, be sure to dip the clippers in rubbing alcohol between each toenail.

Sounds that he wants to make money off the office only prescribed med. He probably has a policy to prescribe every patient that med and adds thousands to income a year. Sad

sharing just in case. They don't carry the solution here in USA so I was in the process of seeing which prescription best. Last it seemed it was a class 2, as I'm pretty sure a class 3 would break my bank. As I said the cream is available easily and cheap. AGISPOR ONYCHOSET is a marketed ointment containing urea 40% and the antifungal bifonazole 1% https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7548867/ It may be a solution to use with the script you were talking of, as I do know some fungal topicals do not work as well as others for fungus. I just know that a side from having to resolve the fungal topical (I got on this path cuz the one my doctor picked was a class 3 running over $500 as it had an applicator, need approval from insurance and unsure my copay) somehow I found this and it was the first time I had hope as I had never heard of using urea cream.

and eventually I just went and got it pulled out. I'm glad I live by the border and went to Mexico. with just some ointment it went away never came back.
yeah I consider that. But with this cream it's supposed to basically have it fall off. Soften it so much that the dead fungus is gone in less than a week or 10 days. Did your scroll back? I've heard that sometimes they grow back and sometimes you don't have a toenail anymore.

I forgot to add, I cut the nails short and bought a rechargeable nail file from Amazon for around 20.00, I think the brand was spelled TUOBEO. It came with disposable heads that I used to file down the thickness of my nails. The Vicks was able to absorb better.

yes! Start with the gut. It’s going to help and eliminate other issues as well. A parasite cleanse is always good.

Not from what I'd heard, but he does have his own shower. That might be true for Athlete's Foot.
no , my ex mum in law came up to visit with it , it appeared on me later but no one else in a family of 5 , so susceptibility is individual , I have been chasing it for 10 yrs plus on 9 toes Yep one remains clear
Im currently taking Lamasil with no issues no side effects and I think im on week 8 and starting to see the clear and the base of my toenail. I also apply Vicks at night. I file my toenails thin and make sure I clean my tools after each filing.
I used Tolcylen religious as instructed for almost a year and saw Zero improvements. I have multiple nails that are infected.
I've gone on the oral lamisil twice, both times it came right back. I've had it 20 years now and it never goes away 😭
I was on it several times for 3 or 6 months.... no liver issues or side effects.... they keep an eye on it. If your liver is fine to start, I wouldn't worry about it
Use Vicks 2X/day give nails lots of air
I have heard the Vicks covering the nail, use a couple of bandaids and the an old sock, if you are consistent over a long time will solve nail fungus. I'm currently trying it out.
I was prescribed Ketoconazole cream. Low cost.
