I've been down this road a couple of times. Try some wide toe box shoes and find a foot chiropractor

Help! I just don't know where to turn. I am suffering from intense foot pain. A little about me. I am 66 years old. I work 3-4 days a week as a cook. I am on my feet for 8 hours a shift. This is really painful for me. I really need to find a nice desk job. I have neuropathy in my toes. My main areas of pain are my arches (which i am told are flat). Then I have these bumps on the side of my foot at the fifth metatarsal. They ache. I have been to see a podiatrist. No help! Not sure what the problem is. Went to an orthopedic doctor. No help there but he did tell me to get custom orthotics. I have an appointment in two weeks to get fitted for custom orthotics. Is this the answer to my problems? At $450 I am cautiously optimistic. Any advice?

Custom orthotics really help me but it’s not a complete cure. I have severe over pronation/fallen arches. I use the orthotics in New Balance 928 shoes.
Try over the counter WalkFit for about $40 first. Buy new on eBay etc
I recommend you see a podiatrist that specializes in biomechanics before you get your customs. Getting customs that exactly fit your feet is great by itself. But someone with biomechanical skill may make some changes that will help even more.
Kathy please give our office a call tomorrow! We specialize in bio mechanical examinations for a customer orthotics and our doctors are well trained and have been in practice for over 36 years. We’d love to help you get some relief. We have some other treatments option as well.
I had a custom pair from my chiropractor that worked really well for years. I kept them way too long. This year I went with the type where they send you foam to step into. So far I have been really pleased. I have arch issues and my heel would start to ache if I was on my feet for long periods of time.
Can you get those thick mats for the floor? I suppose cleaning and drying them could be a problem...
The bumps are called Tailors Bunions. Go on YouTube for help in what to do.
Try a foot massager. My husband has neuropathy and swears this is a huge help for him. He uses it daily
I have the same thing. I have spent so so much money. I am just trying to live with it
Gaylene Jee I've got the wide toe box shoes. I wish I could find someone that a specific kind of foot massage.
Kathy O'Melia where abouts are you and what states are near by? I'm pretty good about searching out things
Bodisky Fain I am reading on this site about people who have gotten custom orthotics but were really unhappy with them. They've had them adjusted but I guess they can only adjust so much. I think my feet might be similar to yours with over pronation and fallen arches. I where Brooks running shoes.
I’ve tried every orthotic out there and the only ones that had true support was Power Step available on Amazon and recommended by all the podiatrist’s I’ve seen if you don’t want to go custom. Custom insoles fitted by Dr is another way but it is a series of adjustments in your body and feet that can be uncomfortable in the beginning. I have a pair of insoles specifically for uneven ground that keep my foot and heel more stable and another pair for every day. The whole process from the beginning has taken over a year but worth it.
how do I find one of those doctors? My experience with podiatrists has not been great. Misdiagnosed injuries and just not having any answers.
Kathy O'Melia you have to call and ask until you find one
Terry Reed bingo! I found a local company that specializes in biomechnics of the foot! I went for my evaluation today. They did a lot of measurements. Showed me where my pressure points were. Where my foot was 'loading' and the pronation of my feet. Video taped my walking. Finally took an impression of my feet. I know that unlike my OTC orthotics my right and left orthotics will be different because I have different issues in each foot. I am cautiously optimistic that when I pick up my orthotics next Friday I will start seeing some relief of pain. Thank you for your suggestion!
unfortunately I am in Wisconsin but I found someone specializing in biomechnics here!
Bill Lyon thank you for this.Comment because for the better part of my day, i've been researching insoles for my shoes, as I am a host in a restaurant 4-5 days a week.. & have been there 4mos; my feet & ankles are so sore everyday. 😞 hmm, I spent some time on the phone with the good feet store. And after reading the reviews about that and the astronomical price, I have to rethink that... I have seen the advertisement for the ones you mentioned with the foam that they send you.And I think I might go that route, especially after reading your (simple, but effective) comment. so thank you.
Bill Lyon Did you get orthotics from Upstep? My suggestion is get the kit and inform them what type of foot condition you have and they will m ake your orthotics. After receiving them go to a reputable shoe store and take your orthotics with you and the store clerk will.find shoes that fit your orthotics and place them in your shoes.
AnnMarie Trupia my neighbor did the good feet route and spent over $1000 and had to buy their shoes. I was very skeptical about the foam but I have been pleased so far for me anyways. Hope you have success.
AnnMarie Trupia , my podiatrist uses the foam-type material for taking the foot impressions. I have the full orthotics with the metatarsal pads built in. I usually have them remade every 2 yrs as the material under the metatarsals wears down. Best money I spend!
Ann Cotter yes. They were very responsive to my particular situation.
Karen Mahtin now that I you mention it i did have mats in various parts of the kitchen. I don't know what happened to them. I am going to talk to my boss.
So I talked to my boss about getting those for in front of the tables and counters we work at. I am a cook in a large Assisted Living Facility. He started talking about how dirty they get blah blah. He's OCD. I told him they might help with my foot pain. He starts going off about his foot issues. He has plantars warts. He's broken his one foot. Etc...He's 46 but I am 66! I thought what is this a contest to see whose foot pain is worse. We have a matt and towel service that gives us new mats every week!
Kathy O'Melia "so i'msure you'd understand my issues if you had to stand all day." i wonder if there's some way -- do you have a union? or state labor laws that'd protect you? -- to fight for the accomodation you need. But again, pointing out the service SHOULD help. Does he really have OCD, or do you mean like how we say someone's "anal (retentive)," that he is very concerned about cleanliness?
Jacquel Washington no I think tailors bunions are right below the small toe. These are farther down the foot.
I paid a lot of money for custom orthotics twice. The first ones were hard as a brick, very thick for any shoe, and made my foot pain worse. The second ones were almost as hard, equally thick and not feasible to wear in any of my shoes. A ton of money in the trash. I have somewhat flat feet too and I had better luck buying some soft ones that are not custom from Amazon for $30. I think they're called cloudsoles.
