Hi everyone! Looking for advice. I have an upcoming bunion surgery (Lapidus) - been needing it for years, but I am an avid runner and didn’t want to miss any races. Been battling Plantar Fasciitis for 9 months, so decided I might as well get one of the bunion surgeries out of the way. My doctor says he does a Gastroc Recession as part of his procedures, but I am just not sure I want him to do that. Anyone else have the Gastroc Recession with your bunion surgery? Pros and cons? TIA!

Hi Bobbie Jo-I’ve had this procedure in each leg to reduce some of the tightness which is related to my flat feet. I also had two big toe fusions which were lapidus. While the recovery from the lapidus was pretty rough, the Gastroc Recession was not difficult to recover from. Anytime I walked or ran, I always had pain and swelling from the big toe procedure and that went on for nearly a year. I didn’t notice the Gastroc Recession at all.
- good to know! Ugh - the videos of it look like it’s cutting a muscle/tendon in two. I worry about prolonged weakness in the calf or other long-term issues. Thanks for the information!
I had Lapidus and hammer toe correction in Oct . Dr says still no running for another month . 4 Months total .
Get a second opinion make sure it’s necessary
I had gastroc recession in 2023 when I had my lapiplasty and adductoplasty done. Helped to have a little more dorsiflexion and helped with flat foot

neither of those. The incision site is sensitive on the surface but that’s it
