Sounds like you are doing the right things but it would still be a good idea to have your doctor look at it.

I had some tenderness on the ball of my left foot so I thought it was a muscle pull but then after a few days I was starting to think that maybe I had stepped on something even though I don't remember any painful incident like stepping on a bee or piece of glass. I have been walking barefoot for about 15 years (which has been very good for my foot health and overall health) although mostly on grass/sand/dirt in the warmer months and inside my house year round but I did walk on a rougher prairie area shortly before this started. I see a tiny slit on the bottom of my foot but the more tender part is actually directly above that below the 4th toe and there is also a small dense raised up area (see photo). It doesn't hurt, just some mild discomfort when I put pressure on it, but I am concerned since the rest of my foot and ankle started to swell up about a week later (see photo comparing feet/ankles) and became kind of red. There is no pus or red streaks or fever. A friend was able to get a better look and said he didn't see anything and actually thought it was sprained. It is possible that by walking on my heel to avoid putting pressure on the ball I made it worse and caused more swelling, hard to say. I have been soaking it in salt, putting neosporin and baking soda paste on it and elevating it a few times a day. I also put some moleskin on either side of the tender part so there is less pressure on it when I walk but I only started doing all of these things about a week afterwards, so just the past 2 days. Any other suggestions? Or should I get a blood test to see if it's infected? I am not in pain and it is such a small spot but I am concerned it could escalate but I don't really know what exactly is wrong.

I’ve been in practice 35 yrs. Self treating usually doesn’t end well. Old wives tales don’t suffice as good medicine. Please see a trained professional.
Go to the doctor. Could be a plantar wart, a neuroma or a even a fracture.
See a podiatrist. One whom is board certified by American board foot and ankle surgery
Taking care of yourself is so important hoping this resolves soon for you.
Dr Google can get you in a deep dark hole unless you are looking up something you've been diagnosed with. Even then Dr Google can be bad. Save your brain hurting and just get the Dr to give their thoughts on what's going on

Yes, they were closed all weekend so I have just been googling and searching trying to figure stuff out. I also don't have insurance so I am not even sure where all I can go as you need to pay up front and I don't have that but don't want to go to the ER where I don't get a specialist and waste the whole day and get hit with a much higher bill 🙁
Thanks! None of the doctors in my area were open over the weekend and I didn't want to go to the ER and the doctors were all booked today but I have an appointment for tomorrow so I was just google/facebooking in the interim. I actually find it helpful to gather up information so I will enter into the appointment more educated and can ask more intelligent questions.
Would I need someone who has a ultrasound machine? what percentage of podiatrists are board certified?
Thanks! I was able to get in with a podiatrist yesterday and it turned out it was a really coarse hair that got stuck in there and caused a build up of pus. He said he had actually seen that before. And my swollen foot and ankle was caused by my walking on my heel to avoid the lump on the bottom of my foot. Luckily things are improving, they said the wound should be closed up in about a week 🙂
