So here’s my basic story...

So here’s my basic story... I think I have shared pieces or maybe all of it but that’s the pain meds for you. Lol 2 years ago I injured my ankle while on my daughter’s Make a Wish trip. I had always had the bunion, but walking on the ball of my foot due to the ankle injury magnified it. We decided that repairing the bunion was the best way to go to better support the ankle. That surgery was supposedly uneventful. However, the strength in my foot continued to decline. After 3 months of PT I gave up. Over the last year I have had a recurrent fracture to the 4th and 5th metatarsals. Decreased feeling to the toes at first but had spread to half my foot. Moved to a new state... went back to the foot doctor and he immediately suspected multiple nerve entrapment (tarsal tunnel). He confirmed through an emg that in fact I had significant neuropathy throughout. We initially tried neurontin but that made me crazy. Literally. He went in yesterday for a 3 hour surgery. He released the posterior and anterior tibial nerves as well as the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. I can’t take pics yet but I basically have about 18 inches of stitches (4 separate incisions from my ankle to my knee). Yesterday I had a nice nerve block so I felt pretty good, actually. That has worn off... I feel like my leg might just fall off. I’m partial weight bearing on forearm crutches and bandages to my knee. I share on this site, because even though the bunion part is “done” I feel like the whole foot operates together. For anyone struggling after bunion... it just might be a bigger problem. The good news... I can already feel my toes!! My doctor said it wasn’t a guarantee because nerves are funny that way. I will celebrate that for now.

Hooray for feeling toes! I am 14 days post-op today & did not begin to feel returned sensation in my four 'little' toes until approximately five days after surgery.

You poor dear. I too am an ankle injury with a bunion. Still learning and off to my first appointment in January. I am worried about a over pronating ankle, a bulging tendon and a big toe with a bunion providing no support. Hope my journey is a bit smoother.

Wow! That's quite the journey. I got the bunion on my good (left) leg operated on because I need a total knee replacement on my right leg. Now, my right knee is NOT happy at having to do more than its share of the work. That bone on bone slipping feeling is no fun! 🙁

I know it’s been some time since you posted this, but I’m wondering how you are doing after having the nerve surgery? I have continued to have nerviness and numbness in my big toe and the upper areas around it after lapiplasty and hammertoe correction. It is difficult for me to lift my foot up at the ankle after 4 months and just about that long of PT. I’m not sure what type of doctor to see because my surgeon won’t address it. Thanks, and I hope you are doing well.

Interesting... my left leg also had a knee injury years ago. I was reading that the deep peroneal nerve often becomes entrapped from that. I can totally relate to the one leg compensating issue... my hip is currently working overtime.
