Big toe still stiff—did hardware removal fix yours? Hi everyone, I had bunion surgery in October. Healed well—no pain—but my big toe is still stiff and won’t flex on its own. Surgeon says screws probably aren’t the cause, but removing them might help. Recovery would be: • 3 days in a surgical shoe • Walking normally in a week • No high-impact exercise for 4 weeks Has anyone had titanium screws removed? • Did it help stiffness or motion? • Was recovery easy? • Any downsides? Not bending the toe seems a recurring issue. Same here and my surgeon said the screws are not interfering with the toe movement so he didn’t recommend removing the screws. I had manipulation under anaesthesia to break scar tissue and steroid injections in the joint. I had it yesterday so I’ll let you know if I see improvements
my surgeon said the same, it’s not the screws but getting them removed could help. I’d love to know if your procedure yesterday helps!
Anonymous member unfortunately no improvement, my toe is still very stiff and is causing me pain after long walks or exercise😢
I have stiff big toes and my doctor says it’s because I have a lot of scar tissue which apparently is not very common. The only way to fix it is yes, with more surgery but it wouldn’t be a very big deal like the actual bunion surgery. I’ve been so busy I haven’t taken the time to really consider it but I’ll probably do it as some point if insurance will cover it. I’m two years post op. I want to be able to wear my heels again!

I thought I had to just live with it. My first loosened up after 10 months but not fully. I’m 2.5 post op on second and it’s stiff as well. I don’t think I’ll do anything else.
I was told screws and plates can be removed but toe will always remain stuff. Fusion
Hello, did you get the hardware removed? I am going to see another surgeon in few weeks to see what he thinks. Due to stiffness I am now developing Morton neuroma and I have metatarsal pain
