Annie Lennox was right, because if 🎶sweet dreams are made of this, and who am I to disagree?🎶 😅 I'm sitting at around 5 1/2 weeks post-op... from MIS bunion surgery, and today was like a dream... I always feel a light touch of anxiety before walking because I don't want any contact between my footwear and the incision site. So I took a deep breath and went for a walk in my wide-toe-box sandals (with orthopedic support), but WITHOUT using a protective Band-Aid to cushion my healing incisions. Just like Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, I did this 🎶On my own🎶 so I could walk with no pressure and alternate between walking faster or slower, finding my groove on my own terms. I complete all my toe/foot mobility exercises and things can still feel a little "tight" sometimes, and to the untrained eye, I probably look like I'm walking normally? But more importantly, my confidence is increasing. I can now use light/medium dumbbells for some exercises without the need for a chair... but I thought with all the core work I've been doing, Calvin Klein was going to call me for the summer ad campaign! 😅 It's worth mentioning that at about 2 weeks post-op, I noticed random light patches of skin near the incision site, and I was shedding so much skin (especially over where my old bunion used to reside) that I had to double-check it wasn't midnight and I wasn't howling at a full moon. Everything seems to have settled, and I think my obsession with moisturizing, drinking water, quality sleep, and listening to Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World" helps a lot. Look after yourselves, my friends.

Afternoon foot peeps! I’ll be 6wks post-op tmrw. I had my 5th pt session this morning. As usual, the edema massage felt wonderful 😴. My therapist directly massaged my incision as well, in order to start loosening up the scar tissue in that area. She says it “feels like a minimal amount” but that the area needs to be massaged at least twice a day. During the toe stretching, she was able to get another “pop”, which provided a sigh of relief for me! Initially during the flexion exercises, my toe started out very stiff. As usual, as she continued on with the exercises, it slowly loosened up and became more flexible. 🙌🏾 After about 20 minutes of her rotating between massaging, stretching and flexing, she had me go to the gym. There, I walked on the treadmill in order for her to assess my gait, stride, balance and heel-to-toe push-off. I’d notice myself still compensating a few times and immediately correct it. She noticed as well, of course. She said that I’m “gradually improving”. I can physically feel the difference as well. 😀 The hallux dorsiflexion exercise has been my main issue, so she had me stand in front of a handrail in order to perform standing heel raises. Those hurt a little but I did okay. Pain is necessary for healing, right?! 🥴 She also had me walk up and down a set of stairs in order to watch my heel-to-toe push-off. After walking up and down those steps, she had me practice standing on the edge of a step (with only my front forefoot on the edge of the step and the remainder of my foot floating without support). I did okay with that exercise but boy, I was nervous and those handrails come in pretty dang handy. 🤷🏽♀️ *It’s ironic how we get used to doing certain physical activities on a daily basis and don’t even take notice until we’re receiving pt!* She wants to see me at least 2 more sessions, maybe 3, so I went ahead and scheduled 2 more appts w/her. Over the next week, I am to focus on doing standing heel raises as much as possible to help strengthen my toe, while also loosening up the remaining scar tissue to better help with flexibility. I’ve attached 2 screenshots of today’s post-therapy note. I’m ECSTATIC with the improvement in my dorsiflexion!!! 💃🏾 I hope you all continue healing positively.

5 week update: Most of my scab has fallen off, and I am still getting used to looking at the new shape of my foot. With my PT homework, I have restored about 70 percent mobility in my toe, so that is coming along nicely. At my second PT session yesterday, we are working on balance and strengthening my ankle muscles. Since I can balance on my one leg with no problem on a regular floor, we moved the single leg balancing to on top of a foam mat. Also other exercises on a wobble board. I told the physical therapist that walking up stairs had gotten more normal, but that I was still going down the stairs like a toddler, with both feet meeting on one stair before going to the next. So we worked on rolling through the foot on a low stair. I can wear Hokas for 5 hours now before switching to Crocs. Walking around in the world has gotten easier, but living in a city, I am always scared that someone will step on my foot accidentally. So I am just careful about where I go. Overall progressing nicely after just 2 PT sessions, and i am scheduled for 3x a week PT now. I am especially happy about my toe mobility since my biggest fear before surgery was not being able to fo planks or lunges. Toe mobility us important in the yoga and pilates that I love.
