I saw my podiatrist on Monday. I am allowed full use of my foot now, with a shoe on, and found out something I wanted to share with you all.
The reason the doctors have you putting weight on your foot so early, even with all the swelling that comes with it etc, is to prevent disuse osteopenia. It is where the bone minerals start to break down because your body tells your foot it isn't being used so no need to rebuild bone.
How did I find this out? Because my surgeon's PA told me not to put weight on my foot at four weeks. I didn't see my podiatrist until Monday (7 weeks out) and had x-rays taken. When he entered the room and saw my rollator and boot he asked why I was still using them. I told him what the PA told me. He looked at my husband who acknowledged that yes she said that. The podiatrist said, "Well that explains your x-rays." I thought my foot wasn't healing. I began to freak out. He brought up the x-rays and showed me the bone is healing fine but it looked kind of cloudy/dark on the x-ray over all. He told me it is disuse osteopenia. He said to start walking on that foot immediately with the boot on for a week and then switch to a tennis shoe.
If you have been told by someone other than your podiatrist not to put weight on your foot and you are over 4 weeks out, contact the podiatrist directly to find out if you should or shouldn't be using your foot. It is a normal part of being in a cast or boot and is completely reversable if is it just from disuse.
I was told my next set of x-rays in 6 weeks should show it has cleared up. I swear medical people need to communicate with each other more. See less
