I am allowed full use of my foot now, with a shoe on, and found out something I wanted to share with you all. The reason the doctors have you putting weight on your foot so early, even with all the swelling that comes with it etc, is to prevent disuse osteopenia. It is where the bone minerals start to break down because your body tells your foot it isn't being used so no need to rebuild bone. How did I find this out? Because my surgeon's PA told me not to put weight on my foot at four weeks. I didn't see my podiatrist until Monday (7 weeks out) and had x-rays taken. When he entered the room and saw my rollator and boot he asked why I was still using them. I told him what the PA told me. He looked at my husband who acknowledged that yes she said that. The podiatrist said, "Well that explains your x-rays." I thought my foot wasn't healing. I began to freak out. He brought up the x-rays and showed me the bone is healing fine but it looked kind of cloudy/dark on the x-ray over all. He told me it is disuse osteopenia. He said to start walking on that foot immediately with the boot on for a week and then switch to a tennis shoe. If you have been told by someone other than your podiatrist not to put weight on your foot and you are over 4 weeks out, contact the podiatrist directly to find out if you should or shouldn't be using your foot. It is a normal part of being in a cast or boot and is completely reversable if is it just from disuse. I was told my next set of x-rays in 6 weeks should show it has cleared up. I swear medical people need to communicate with each other more. See less All reactions:

Carrie Miller Haas Wow. I wish I had known this earlier. I was in a boot for 12 weeks. X-rays were showing possible non-union because of that cloudy line where bone was trying to grow back together. I’ve been walking for a month now with a shoe, but have to use a Bone Stimulator for 3 months because I’m “behind”. Thank you for sharing!

Lori Kathmann Aubin Top contributor Jenn Chladil, thank goodness you’ve caught it early enough. You are getting so close.Yay! Yes, definitely issues with communication. You know I’ve had all kinds of issues, and pretty sure I will have lasting mobility issues with that toe. But, in my case my foot is the least of my worries.

Last week I was able to talk with Steve Saltzman as they are working hard to open on May 22nd. Steve told me a few of the “bells and whistles” products and services of the other stores will be added after they get the new store up and running. Take a few minutes to go to the Lucky’s Market web site - https://www.luckysmarketsohio.com to sign up to… See more All reactions: Rodney Bowers, Sarah Allen Hageman and 188 others
