I had a bunion and arthritis in my left foot. It had been painful for several years before I had surgery. The arthritis was caused by pressure from the bunion. X

Looks like a bunion to me on your right foot ..

If there’s only been pain for a year and a half, it might be worthwhile to assess the footwear that you’ve been using — do you have space to spread toes in the shoes?

When most of the deformity is at the end of the toe toward the toenail, this is an accommodation for big toe joint stiffness and possibly arthritis. It has the appearance of what we call hallux limitus. Consider a decompression osteotomy if your toe is not stiff.

Looks like both. I have very similar going on with both my feet. I am very mindful not to cause more harm by using the big toe side of my feet, like gas pedal on car, use outside foot. Also, when I walk, I've learned to use a more march step than flex step like normal. It hasn't gotten worse. Doesn't correct toes, but doesn't increase problem anymore. I worked in Physical Therapy for 30+ years and one thing is for sure, I do NOT want surgery. It's hell to go thru and many times patients toes will revert to same problem down the road. Hope this helps. I use castor oil on them every night before bed to keep skin soft and increase mobility while I'm not weight-bearing. That helps me too. Good luck

In general people with arthritis and osteoarthritis age and increase of BMI makes the feet situation worse.

Following, this happened to me last week.

Yeah, the toe box space matters doesn’t it, I wish I’d known about toe splay sooner. Are you getting a wide toe box or wide shoes, like wide shoes can be wide in the midfoot and still taper at the toes right? The Altra running shoes and Topo Athletic shoes are great for me at the moment. I’d love to try some other styles like Lem’s. I should probably be more diligent with the exercises from Gaithappens and thefootcollective to expand my shoes options though. I hope you find some solutions that help.
