Well my surgery supposed to be at the end of October and I bought lots of stuff already, even the pull up underwear, if I can’t make it on time. I’m 62 and hopefully I’ll be able to get around with the knee scooter.

Surgery October 9th.
Surgery October 9th. I’m very stressed. 69. Live alone. No weight bearing for at least 6 WEEKS. I plan on skilled nursing home for 2 weeks after. But I have bowel and bladder issues. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT ??? Very very apprehensive

A knee scooter makes everything easier. Maybe buy a bedside commode for easy access
Knee scooter, crutches, walker. Get all the things. I couldn’t maneuver the crutches at first because I was too high and in too much pain so the walker really helped. I also highly recommend the ice cooler because the last thing you’ll want to do is get up for ice. The water stays cool in the cooler for like 12 hours and you can wrap it around your leg and then you just pull the hose off to get up and plug it back in when you’re ready and you’re still wrapped. The plug is just against your leg. Seriously. Your foot looks bad. Mine was the same configuration but a bit less. And it was painful for a long time. I just want you to be prepared. Have food and drink by your bed since you’re alone. Have everything by your bed. Your bowel will be a thing as your pain pills stop you up so make sure you have stool softeners. Good luck to you and try to get someone to be with you for the first 2 days at least.
Practice now so you know what to expect. Try to build up as much muscle in your legs as possible. Recruit friends and family to swing by to help!
Talk to the doc about getting some in home care.
I managed with a knee scooter. I prebought a lot of easy meals, used Amazon grocery.
I live on my own and did alot of prepping and practicing. I practiced using the shower stool, knee scooter a total life saver and walking on my heel for about a month bf surgery. All the prepping and practicing made a huge difference in my recovery. I don't regret my surgery and would do it again in a heart beat. I don't have the arthritic pain or pain in general. Even the pain after surgery wasnt bad and I was in physio week #8 and bending my toe back to normal week 12
I would talk to your surgeon again. The fixation we have these days are so robust that it's not uncommon to be allowed same day weight bearing in a boot instead of strict nwb
Try 9 weeks and your current health and support and physical therapy is key to a successful recovery
Get a knee scooter and you’ll be OK. Practice with it now before the surgery.
I bought adult diapers too. I wore them around. Not as bad as I thought
While doing hospice care for family an older nurse… my age😊 taught me a great trick. Line the commode with a large black garbage bag and sprinkle kitty litter in the bottom. Makes commode clean up much more manageable! You’ll be great post op… I was. Lived alone. Never had much pain. And…. Thankfully making it to the bathroom in time was easy! A Shower bench is a must! Good Luck
there are commode liners
Were you NWB?
Juls Snowden shower chair is nice
Frankly, I’m not worried about groceries or a lot of things I’m worried about the non-weight-bearing and going to the bathroom. I have some issues with IBS and some bladder issues. That’s what I’m scared of.
Knee scooter. Get a good one that can be used outside too. I was in one for 10 weeks. I didn’t have stairs in my house except two steps down to garage. I was terrible on crutches. Right after surgery you will be over hydrated due to the IV’s and you’ll still be learning the scooter and how to get up on it. I used Depends the first few nights
were you no weight bearing ? I think even heal walking might be a tad easier
ArticulateStrawberry9264 Sadly, different surgeons, different thought processes. Many surgeons do allow wb same day, albeit minimal but still a great thing
ArticulateStrawberry9264 Different procedures require different protocols. Some bunions cannot be repaired w the procedure that allows for immediate weightbearing.
I have had 6 foot surgeries and I highly recommend going to a rehabilitation home. I live alone and lots of health issues. Unfortunately, there is a worker shortage in these types of facilities. Maybe ask to have a bed pan close to you. I wish you luck. I hope all goes well.
Do you have a toilet upstairs or do you live in an apartment? You can get a commode by the bed if it’s upstairs and ask a friend to help clean it for you? I have had bunion surgery and was non weight bearing for two weeks each time. For five mins out of that hour I could hop about my home. Batch cook now before you go in and make sure you have easy meals to hand. Keep snacks in your room along with pain killers, a foot raise pillow and your phone charger. Please don’t worry, you will be fine. It passes quickly. When I was last in, the lady before me was 75 and had both of her feet done at once. You are having one. It is manageable. You will be fine. Take it slow and de clutter your home if you need to to negate trips and falls.
I live in a large home and used a wheelchair to get myself around. I also used a no-wheel walker to get myself up and over things. (My physical therapist told me he treats more injuries from knee scooters than actual surgery). As my healing progressed, having a walking cane really helped too. Pre-make as many meals as you have room for.
I am also 69 and my feet were similar. I was NWB for 6-7 weeks. The bedside toilet was so helpful, as well as the knee scooter. I meal prepped a lot ahead of time. At the two week mark, I still required some help. PT at 8-9 weeks helped a lot. Best of luck to you:)))
pull ups just in case
Sit on a walker and propel with your good foot. I found that easiest
My suggestion is a second opinion
dont do it! I have known many coworkers that had this surgery, and were still wearing the surgical boot a year later!
The minute you feel you have to go, get up and head to bathroom Don't lay in bed waiting thinking you can hang on for a bit. It always takes longer to get to the toilet than you think. My non weight bearing was with an off set boot so I could still walk with help of either a walker or crutches at first and then without any support. Easier to get around.
Protective underwear, I wish I had though of this. Wetting my pj when first up in the morning was a regular thing, that I was not expecting. And I'm 56
Would you do again?
the problem you’re asking about comes from our need to try to resolve the emotions nagging at us while also trying to trust and believe the surgeon with their more factual information. Heart and head conflict, not to mention terror, dread, hopefulness and the desire to stop hurting while getting back some of our normal past function. Many of us would not do it if we’d known how our experience would turn out. Many sailed through and are very pleased to of had foot surgery. I have no answers to give as all of mine failed. I will tell you that after 3 surgeries and nearly 6 months of a knee scooter, the other very helpful tools were 1. a stool with wheels. My hallways are very short, the knee scooter wouldn’t have fit or turned around. I would carefully transfer to the stool then roll backwards into the restroom. 2. An ice machine, 6 frozen water bottles, a voice activated plug and a cardboard box lined with something to muffle sound. You’ll plug your machine into the voice activated plug. You’ll put the frozen bottles of water in the machine along with water. When you wake up in the night simply tell the plug to turn on. I had the wrap for the machine already on my foot. This allowed me to never get up to get ice for the swelling. Also I put the box over the machine so I didn’t need to listen to it. Best of luck.
amazing suggestions! Saving for future use, thx.
I was also terrified of bowel issues. And leg cramps! But perhaps it was the painkillers that slowed things down, or just being on bedrest, I had no issues. Hope the same for you.
Use protective underwear Tena has an inner elastic
My surgery is November im 71 .I have bladder & bowel problems too & aim to move into spare room next to bathroom! Im non weight bearing for 2 weeks apart from 5 mins each hour to help with clots .Ive bought a bath board & chair for the bath plus Adult body wipes ,a cover for my foot & freezer Gel packs for behind my knee .All from Amazon .Think I've everything I need just Apprehensive about it all !
Walker was the way to go. Crutches too awkward, scooter was OK for out of the house, but knees hurt. Also ice machine was wonderful... To get it to stay cold longer, freeze 4 bottles if water, use them instead of ice cubes in the reservoir. Last a long time.
I liked the rollator better than the knee scooter as it was more stable and I could sit down when I needed to. BUT, you can’t lock the brakes, so you have to squeeze the handles so that it does not roll away when you’re getting up.
