Weak foot arches and bunions: can exercise fix the problem?

Archive date 5 archived replies

The arches of my feet always hurt. I have a low arch (I think), bunions, and I believe my arches collapse/“fall” or are weak. I may also have some ankle alignment issues but not certain. I stack three books on top of each other, stand on top and do a step down on one leg 10x for three sets each leg. When I do this I notice one thing that hurts is my arch of the foot. I also tried skateboarding and the first thing to start hurting is the arches of my feet…Skateboarding does a similar movement where you’re standing on one leg and doing step downs. I therefore think I have weakness in my arches and want to see if I can fix with exercise. I also have hip dysplasia and clicking knees, and I have some bone issues and used to see a PT as a kid for my back. I could be slue-footed but not certain Does anyone have any insight in this and what I can do? I would so love to do exercises to help my (what I think is) weak arches/collapsed arches. I already do the ones where you put a towel under your foot and scrunch your toes.

I suggest you see a podiatrist who specializes in biomechanics and sports. They will take you through a series of tests to discover the problems and find ways to keep you active.

It sounds like strengthening your arches could really help. Along with toe scrunches, you might try calf raises, arch lifts, and foot doming exercises. Custom insoles or arch supports could also provide relief. Have you considered checking in with a podiatrist or PT for personalized advice?

Are you hypermobile? Might be EDS?
