Hi everyone! I’m looking for experiences and advice from people who have had revision surgery on the big toe/MTP I joint, especially from other runners. I had both feet operated on in 2019 because of hallux valgus/bunion deformity. Unfortunately, the deformity came back quite quickly. Within about a year, by 2020, the angle had already returned to more than 35 degrees. Now they are over 40 and 45 degrees. The pain comes especially in the second toe. So I’m now facing revision surgery. I have recently seen two different orthopedic surgeons, and they have somewhat different approaches. One surgeon is considering a corrective surgery around the first metatarsal (I-MT), with the aim of correcting the alignment while preserving the MTP I joint. However, because of the previous surgery, there are some uncertainties regarding the available bone and the stability of the correction. The other surgeon thinks that both MTP I joints now have osteoarthritis, fixed deformity and limited range of motion. In his opinion, fusion (arthrodesis) of the MTP I joint would be the more reliable option for treating the pain and stabilizing the joint. The case will also be discussed at a foot surgery meeting to get a consensus on the best approach. I have to admit that the idea of MTP I fusion really scares me, mainly because I’m a runner and being active is a very important part of my life. I have run very long distances, including 120 km ultramarathons in uneven mountain terrain. I would really like to continue running and being able to move as naturally as possible. I am nearly 35 years old. So I would especially love to hear from: * Runners who have had MTP I fusion – were you able to return to running? * How does running feel after the surgery compared with before? * Have you been able to run long distances or ultras? * How do uneven surfaces, hills and downhill running feel? * How long did it take before you were able to run again? In the very beginning, I had severe nerve pain went to numerous doctors over a year and finally was diagnosed with CRPS which was literally a nightmare. I ended up having to have a nerve block which helped tremendously . Well fast-forward two years after that and now I am having pain in the ball of my foot right underneath my big toe pad so I will be seeing another orthopedic doctor next week. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain? The Doctor Who originally performed my surgery, said that it appeared to be a lesion type cyst or inflammation just from going by an ultrasound image. But that's pretty much all I know . The doctor I go to next week will be for a second opinion as it has been like 4 months since then and still have pain . Sometimes shooting sharp pain . I haven't found a shoe that feels good or fits well!! First I ordered these in my size but wide, my middle toe is longer so it was pressing against the front of the sandal so I sized up- but got normal width. The middle to back of my foot is quite narrow. If I tighten the back of the sandal, my middle toe presses against the front. The second strap looks way too loose but if I tighten it, it presses on my foot and hurts when I walk. May be an image of shoes. May be an image of espadrilles.
