I had lapiplasty in 2023, recovery went well and I resumed all things I was doing before surgery. In April 2026, I stepped awkwardly on a rock while wearing sandals and apparently awoke some nerve . The nerve pain is random and somewhat better but certain shoes do make it worse. I am using a TENS machine to hopefully improve it. But my doctor thinks removing the hardware will make things better. I also have a slight hammertoe on my second toe that needs to be addressed. And a bone spur is now where they shaved the bunion bone. It is again painful when certain shoes apply pressure on that spot. And my gait is definitely off when this happens.. So, my question is do I move forward with again fixing all these issues or continue with pain management until it no longer is manageable. The bone spur and hardware removal are short recovery periods, the hammertoe means a long recovery unfortunately. Pictures are from 2023 and the current one.

Your hammer toe will most likely keep getting worse. Do not have a tendon release in the hammer toe, i did and in 1 year it became a cross over causing other issues. If your having issues with hammer toe ( blisters, redness hurting in shoes) id go ahead and have hammer toe operation.

Have you tried manually stretching your hammer toe? I had one on each foot but was able to ‘fix’ them by manually stretching the toes( several times every day for many weeks). It’s worth trying while you decide what to do

Removing hardware does make it better

As I enter my 4th month of recovery, I find the hammertoe to be the hardest to recover from. IMHO- do the least possible thing unless the hammertoe is causing you real pain.

yeah, that is my concern that the recovery time is so long. I had my right foot hammertoe corrected and it was definitely a long recovery. But if I am having surgery for two things, I am fixing the third because surgery is already expensive.
