I'm 77, a guy in great health, had x-ray yesterday, confirmed bunions both feet. Hallelujah . I'm 77, a guy in great health, and I work out and walk every day. Yesterday, I saw the orthopedic doctor, and he had me get X-rays of my feet. They clearly showed I have bunions on both feet. I've noticed them for a long time, probably five years or so. They never bothered me, and I always wear wide shoes, but lately, I'm starting to feel a slight tingling at the bottom of my right third toe. Anyway, the doctor said surgery would be an option down the road. I "love" surgeons who "cut" as a solution. I joined this group to hear about your experiences and alternatives to avoid surgery. What kind of exercises might help stop the progression, etc.? I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Hi I'm 46 I'm fairly fit walk swim etc and have a physical job on my feet a lot unfortunately, I tried everything for my bunion wide shoes a splint at night which I couldn't get on with . Orthopedic shoes made at the hospital they didn't work also have arthritis in my big toe joint. Anyway on the 8th April I finally had surgery I'm doing well and healing well I'm five weeks tomorrow post operation. Have my six week check 20th May. Now hoping its all worked and I can now walk without pain and comfortably wear shoes.

I heard from surgeons if they don’t hurt, let them be. I have hammer toes and bunions on both feet. But I can still walk. I need to find special shoes, and padding on the bottom. But I can still walk without pain. So I’m leaving them be. I’m 64. Good luck in your decision.

68 yo and I had bunion and hammertoe surgery in December. Nine days later I was in the hospital with a pulmonary embolism and 14 minutes of cpr due to cardiac arrest. Not worth the bunion surgery.

Mine hurt a bit while walking but I’m living with it. Things could be worse.

Get the surgery. Bunions don't heal themselves

You need to weigh up the risks of surgery as the recovery time can be lengthy and the surgery not always 100% successful. I had my surgery 6 months ago but need further surgery as my toe needs further repositioning.

Surgery corrects the developed deformity. Orthotics stabilize the medial column to deal with the mechanical influence that allows progression of the bunion. I usually recommend a bunion night splint you can buy on Amazon which can help with reducing the deformity. And for running shoes look at the shoe made from a company out of Utah called ALTRA.

If they don't hurt, leave them be.

Did he say the tingling was from bunions? Otherwise, if they aren’t bothering you, I’d leave them alone if you can walk okay.

Go to a certified orthotist and get custom orthotics. Silicone toe spacers 24 hrs a day, orthotic inserts, and occasional PT. If you do 1 or 2 pt sessions they can teach you everything you need.

It tingling feeling is from bunion, but could also be from sciatica, only now Im understanding that maybe sciatica is camouflaging the very very slight "pain" / tingling from the bunion.

Let my bunions develop over some years and truly wish I had them fixed via minimally invasive surgery a long time ago. I blame them for the ongoing arthritis I developed mid-foot leading to this surgery. Mine hurt a lot in the end but am lucky to have had an excellent podiatrist who gave me orthotics that got me through.

Has any one used acupuncture treatment to relieve and level of pain from the bunions. I have used it for sciatica, it works.
