My surgeon told me 6-8 months before you don’t notice your foot anymore. Swelling can persist 6-12 months as well. You’re through major healing, but your bones and tissue continue remodeling for up to a year

Is it weird that I wore slides (sandals) into my surgery on 4/29 and I still can’t fit my feet into them?
Is it weird that I wore slides (sandals) into my surgery on 4/29 and I still can’t fit my feet into them? I mean, not even half way width wise. It seems odd to me that I got bone shaved off and yet my feet seem wider. I can’t believe they could still be that swollen. My dr says up to a year, but really? I also feel like I still see a bump on the side, but I can see on the X-ray where they were shaved off. I will also add they were not extreme to begin with, but I had pain.

I had surgery in Feb. Swelling improved a bit in May, but once summer heat started I've had constant swelling. Like others I was told it's normal for up to a year.
Did you have the bone shaved without realigning the metatarsal bone…? If the bone wasn’t aligned the bunion will grow back. I’m 6 weeks post op of 3d Lapiplasty surgery. My last visit doctor said I wasn’t elevating foot enough and keeping a nice tight wrap around foot . This was why I still had swelling.
8 weeks PO and still have a ton of swelling. Not cleared for a shoe yet, in a boot, but can’t imagine putting it in a shoe. I do think the swelling has gotten better though. It was swelling instantly when I’d put my foot down, now it takes longer to swell and doesn’t turn as dark purple. Progress…
...I'm no doctor but even though the bone has been cut and realigned, there will still be some scar tissue which may feel firm to the touch. I have a similar issue with swelling but like you my doc said anywhere from 3 - 12 months.
It takes a full year. I had my left foot done in October of 2025 chevron osteotomy and my right one done in April of 2026 The left foot is almost 100% healed 10 months later but it can still swell slightly if I am on it a lot. The right foot at 4 months post op still swells and can get sore and stiff. Still doing physio and working on range of motion. My shoes a s sandals from before all fit though. It is a very long recovery and you need to still be elevating as much as possible. My doctor was very clear. He stated that if you cannot dedicate a full 4 months to healing and then continued healing with more normal activities for the next 6-8 months the surgery isn’t for you. Everyone procedure, surgeon and obviously person having the surgery is different. This is just my experience. It is not a quick recovery
I’m seven months post and have noticed that I’m no longer dealing with swelling. It’s been about a month since I iced directly after work.
I’m 4 years PO and continue to wear a larger size than I did before surgery. It’s my new normal.
I was told I could ha e swelling up to a year after. First surgery was March 14...still have some swelling around incision site.
Nope. No surprise. It took me awhile to be able to comfortably fit into slides.
SincereOlive2483 how do I know if it was aligned? I have two screws in each foot so I am assuming it was also aligned I guess?
which procedure did you have?
From my paperwork: I had LEFT first tarsometatarsal arthrodesis, modified McBride bunionectomy, First proximal phalanx osteotomy, intercuneiform stabilization. So Bunionectomy and lapidus fusion.
your procedure was more extensive than mine, as I only had Chevron-Akin osteotomy. Best of success with your healing!
same here looks like I still have a bunion 🫢
I had surgery in April, finally got back into my old sandals but my toes are still very swollen, 4x hammer toes also fixed
I am around 7 weeks post-op and fit into most of my shoes in the morning, but once I have walked for a while, some of them become a bit tight. I "shrink" my foot every night with my cold therapy machine overnight. Also, I ice after going for a longer walk or PT. Ice is your friend. My doctor said that swelling will come and go for months, and not to worry about it.
