Went to my gp, she happily referred me for operation, the podiatrist rejected the referral and sent me onto biomechanics. Been there before and was told no operation, to try insoles. They hurt me like mad. I'm 44, I need my feet to look normal, not like a 90 yr olds. Also, is it normal for a podiatrist to deal with bunions?

You need a referral to a orthopedic surgeon

My dr referred me to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery

I’ve just had my first surgery via an NHS podiatrist

Having foot surgery at 67 isn't ideal - I recommend seeing a specialist when you're younger, if like you're doing now.

My GP referred me direct to an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in feet. Both your feet need surgery ASAP I’m in Australia 🦘 and I’m 67

England. I was referred to podiatric surgery and a senior consultant surgeon did my bunion (Akin, Lapidus and hammertoe procedures). It depends on the Trust that you’re in. You can ask under NHS England Right To Choose to be referred elsewhere in England. Thankfully, my surgeon was quite local to me and more importantly, excellent.

are you NHS? Try orthopedic surgeon and fight for surgery. Meanwhile check out a website called Correct Toes. And get some free exercises from a woman called Petra Fisher much better for you. I never had a problem insoles dodnt make worse

I remember you, as we had surgery around the same time. so glad to see how well you’ve healed!! Truly amazing 🤩

Difference is you have a nerve block instead of a general anaesthetic. Worked a treat and meant I didn’t have to starve or stay in hospital for more than 45 minutes after 😉

i always thought in uk podiatrists did not do operations only foot and ankle surgeons unlike the USA podiatrists do everything.

was fine. They gave me noise cancelling headphones and an iPad with YouTube ready for me to choose anything I wanted to watch (you also can’t see anything) 😉

yeah, I'm 44 and have hid my feet since I was 12. I'd like to wear sandles, flip flops and go swimming without fear of people staring.

i 100% agree. My shoes are ripping open at the bubion sites, and the Taylor bunion sites too, my feet burn when it walk as toes are bending sideways and going underneath and the hammer toes cause rubbing and can it's difficult tonearm shoes as it pokes up and rubs.

I go to advanced orthopedics and sports medicine Dr. T. Kuruvilla. I had MTP fusion Arthrodesis on 6/4. My experience so far has been great! I had Exparel (non opioid) injection after the surgery and it is a godsend!! I haven’t taken anything at all. Have been faithful with icing and elevating.Absolutely no pain so far.

In New Zealand Podiatrists manage foot issues/biomechanics/orthotics etc. I started having major foot issues with the inserts I was given and my Bunion became bigger. I asked to be referred and now I’m under an Orthopaedic surgeon that specialise in foot and ankle surgery. Surgery scheduled for July 4th, a Lapidus/Akin Osteotomy +/- 2nd toe realignment.

I had my surgery with a podiatrist surgeon in UK. Maybe there is a reason they think surgery won't be successful?

My Foot and Ankle Specialist will be doing my operation.

You def need surgery. Your second toes are becoming impacted. I get so sick of these people who reject referrals. Did they meet with you and discuss this or just reject you based on the referral details?
