5 week update: Most of my scab has fallen off, and I am still getting used to looking at the new shape of my foot. With my PT homework, I have restored about 70 percent mobility in my toe, so that is coming along nicely. At my second PT session yesterday, we are working on balance and strengthening my ankle muscles. Since I can balance on my one leg with no problem on a regular floor, we moved the single leg balancing to on top of a foam mat. Also other exercises on a wobble board. I told the physical therapist that walking up stairs had gotten more normal, but that I was still going down the stairs like a toddler, with both feet meeting on one stair before going to the next. So we worked on rolling through the foot on a low stair. I can wear Hokas for 5 hours now before switching to Crocs. Walking around in the world has gotten easier, but living in a city, I am always scared that someone will step on my foot accidentally. So I am just careful about where I go. Overall progressing nicely after just 2 PT sessions, and i am scheduled for 3x a week PT now. I am especially happy about my toe mobility since my biggest fear before surgery was not being able to fo planks or lunges. Toe mobility us important in the yoga and pilates that I love.

Hello! My 11 year old daughter will be getting bunion surgery on her left foot. She is in constant pain, so it’s the next step. My question is: because she is younger, and very active, will she recover faster than an adult. I’m also worried about pain management; I do not want to pump pain pills in her, but also don’t want her to be in pain. Can she come off of these pretty quickly, with Advil/tylenol as the alternative? Realistic expectations for returning to school, etc. Anyone else have their child go through this. I wish I could do it for her.

I had my 6wk post-op follow-up with my surgeon this morning. Prior to the appt w/him, I had X-rays taken. The X-rays show “slightly progressive incomplete healing”. 🤔 I asked him to explain that to me. The word “incomplete” never sounds good. He showed me the X-ray images and pointed to the area. He said it means that “there is a noticeable small gap in the bone graft area but that new bone will form over it over the next few weeks/months”. 🙏🏽 **I didn’t even think to ask for copies of the X-rays.** 🤦🏾♀️ During his assessment of my incision, he said that my tissues reacted to the dissolvable stitches when they started breaking down, meaning there is some delayed healing there. He said “there’s no need to worry about it fully healing”. During his assessment of my toe, he demonstrated the extension and traction exercise by firmly holding my ankle and pulling/holding my toe for 1 full minute until I felt a “pop”. The “pop” felt great. He said it will help loosen up the scar tissue that’s causing the stiffness as well as help with it becoming more flexible. I am to have my husband do that for me at least twice daily.🥰 He then demonstrated some cross friction mobilization exercises of the big toe, which were toe lift-offs and opposite action. I am to do both of these exercises 3x daily 10-20 times each session. So, I am to do all of the following: -return to normal activities as tolerated, including driving 😉 -perform extension/traction exercises 2-3x daily and hold for 1 minute each time until the “pop” -perform cross friction mobilization exercises of the big toe 2x daily 10-20 times each time -continue all other exercises recommended via pt -continue massaging around the incision to loosen up scar tissue -continue massaging my toe to decrease swelling -wear supportive shoes as much as possible He also cut off the majority of the loose dead skin from my incision site! 😃 It was ready to be removed and I was too chicken to do it because I didn’t want to mess it up. 🤷🏽♀️ I am to cover the area with a soft nonstick border for the next week or until it fully closes/heals again in order to ward off infection. I’ll see him again in 4wks! To say I am “happy” would be an understatement.

Hello all! My MIS procedure is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:45am. These items plus a knee scooter and shower chair are what I have to help aid in my recovery. Am I missing anything that is a “must-have”? Thanks in advance!
