Looking for some advice from other sports parents! I have a very athletic 12-year-old son who was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis about two years ago. We’ve done all the things… stretching, inserts, different shoes, etc. and he still continues to have pain, primarily in both heels. I’m currently waiting to get him in with a podiatrist, but at this point I’m starting to wonder if we’re even dealing with plantar fasciitis. He’s very active with baseball and is constantly on his feet, so I know overuse could definitely be part of it. For now, he’s only wearing turf shoes and we have heel cups on the way, but I’m honestly at a loss. I searched the group for other posts about kids with chronic heel pain but couldn’t find much. Has anyone else dealt with this in a child, especially an athletic kid around this age? What ended up being the diagnosis, and more importantly… WHAT ACTUALLY HELPED?!? I’m open to hearing anything! See less Catherine Main-Oster My son when that age played high level soccer. Suddenly developed intense foot pain running. Podiatrist made custom inserts and pain totally went away….20 years ago so it was not diagnosed as PF. Have you tried over the counter inserts ? Sarah Foulke My son is 10 and has recurring heel pain, in one or both heels, it varies. He plays soccer. Fall and spring. But for fun year round. His heel pain went away over the summer with minimal soccer and zero wearing of cleats. This fall…after one practice wearing his cleats, he was crying in pain again. I felt so bad for him!! I don’t have a great answer. But one thing we did just recently was switch shoes. He had Nike cleats, which I didn’t even realize are notoriously narrow. So I said no more Nike (sorry, he loves Nike). We got new cleats that are Addidas. They’re more middle of the road for wideness. I wanted to get New Balance cleats bc they tend to run the most wide but the stores we went to didn’t have any. So we’re trying the addidas for now. Seeing if a wider shoe helps. Cleat especially. I see your son plays baseball, so maybe look at the cleats he wears. Also, I’ve been trying to get my son to stretch more. Hamstring and calf and Achilles tendon stretches. He doesn’t like to do it and honestly I’m not good at making him stick to it. But I think it would help. He also has Footstr inserts in his cleats. He did before too, and they still hurt with the Nikes. But we’ll see if addidas with Footstr inserts make a difference. He hasn’t even had a game yet with this combo to see. That’s all I got. Different shoes/cleats. Padded insoles. Stretching every day. The heel is tied to the whole posterior chain. So I do think religious stretching would be helpful, for the backs of the legs, from the butt down to the feet.
