Comment as Justin Southwest Companion Pass to the MAX Kathy Clark Rising contributor Southwest finally did it. We have been exclusively loyal to SW for over 20 years. We started branching out about 4 years ago, because the SW schedule either didn't go to places we wanted to go, or made it more difficult to get there. (ex. Reno used to be nonstop. It hasn't been for a while. Times for nonstop flights to some of our favorite places have become very inconvenient.) Anyway.....even though it is much easier for us to get to DFW than to Love Field, we made the trek, because we LOVED SW. Even though SW hasn't been a "low cost carrier" for quite some time, we tried to hang on through all the changes, believing in the company's stated ethos. Our last experience has possibly finally torn it. We were traveling to Denver. I purchased my ticket, got a CP seat for my husband, and paid for seat upgrades for both of us. All good. We needed to cancel the trip. My ticket $ and the $ for seats upgrades were available for another ticket we purchased, including the seat upgrade. My CP's $ for seat upgrades was only available for ticket costs (which, thankfully, includes the $11.20 for fees). It is NOT available to pay for seat upgrades. Hmmmmm.......after a lengthy convo w/a lovely person at SW, she explained that this was the policy now. That was one change I was not aware of, While I've been able to swallow most of the changes that have happened, even when they seemed ridiculous (CP upgrade price being less than mine, upgrade prices being cheaper in the app or variable by day, flight credits expiring in 6 months, when you buy the basic seat, etc.), it seems almost like robbery to use good $ to pay for a CP seat upgrade in good faith, but not have it available to pay for CP upgrade for a new ticket. We now have a balance for him that will take more flights to use, that expires before we will use it. That's not right. I think that finally made the decision for us. Sad day in our household. Comment View more answers Dan Kohlmeier I’m curious as to which airline you think will give you a better deal? Most airlines don’t have companion pass at all. I am basically loyal to whichever airline gives me the best deal and has reliable service. So far, for me, that has been Southwest.

View all 3 replies Doug Anderson Make sure you don’t buy round trip tickets as well going forward as on basic point fares they will not cancel one leg of flight if it is cheaper and you want to rebook. You need to cancel entire reservation. The changes keep coming. Been a a-list member and companion pass holder for years. Just a matter of time before companion pass is eliminated. Swa fares have gotten ridiculous as well.
