Big toe nerve pain? I have a small bunion on my left foot wh

Big toe nerve pain? I have a small bunion on my left foot which causes me a lot of foot pain. I went and saw a podiatrist when the outer edge of my big toe became numb and my pain got worse. He told me my bunion was too small to be causing pain and said all my bones are shifting to the left which is a sign of something else going on. He said he couldn’t even correct the bunion. He wanted me to have a nerve conduction study done first. I got one and it’s normal. Anyone else have the toe nerve numbness? I also have excruciating pain when my big toe is hit on the outer top. It almost feels like an ingrown nail but it’s not, just some nerve I guess. All reactions:

Also, my back causes what I thought was neuropathy pain. I have a displaced nerve root. If your insurance pays for it, get a second opinion. It could be too early to correct the bunion. My podiatrist told me it have to be over a 9 degree variance off. Mine was 27 and I am not joking. I put it off that long after I saw a podiatrist when I was younger who never took x-rays and didn't do surgery. I figured I would just hear the same. My primary care doctor said I needed to see again so I did and got a big difference when I went this time. I am a week out from surgery. I wish I had gone in earlier than waiting from age 30ish to age 61.

I had pain under my big toe for months and one day I noticed part of my toe was numb so I went to urgent care and they told me I had a bunion with a cyst. My podiatrist appt is tomorrow. I had no idea what a bunion was and I’m still a bit shocked. I bought new shoes, a tube of voltaren, and those toe separator things. They don’t seem to help. Actually, the toe separator makes my nerve pain worse. It feels like there’s hot water running on my toes. I tried to sleep with it last night and today the bottom of my foot right under the ball is so sore like I hiked in flats or something. I did buy a metatarsal sleeve that actually does feel better but my new shoes, which I bought in a size up, still don’t have enough toe room for me to wear it so my toe rubbed against the side and hurts now. This is not fun! Anyone else have issues with not being able to wear the bunion supports? All reactions:

Comment Sara Powning Top contributor Yes, the toe separators that I have seem to cut the circulation and cause some of my toes to go numb. I cannot sleep with them. Hopefully someone will weigh in with good toe separator advice, there are good ones I think, I’ve seen comments on this group where people like them — maybe from Gaithappens? Gaithappens have an Instagram account worth following. Another account to check is thefootcollective Consider Altra and Topo running shoes for toe splay space. Whatever the brand though, look for natural foot shape footwear— wearing the running shoes with toe box space is best. Those two brands, Altra and Topo, are well known for being foot shaped. I ordered online and the returns policies seem good. I now have one pair of each of those brands. Another thing that I want to learn to do is to use physio tape to tape my bunions. I wonder if it may be an alternative to using the toe separators? I’ve seen videos that may help to learn the technique. I’ve had physiotherapists tape my feet in the past… oh that’s another on the to-do list: go to physiotherapy. We all have weak bits that have contributed (or caused) the foot issues. Stopping progression or even reversing some of it, depends on strength and identifying if there is a condition like hypermobility. Our muscles are what hold us up, it’s all connected, even shoulder and hip positions affect how we land on our feet (obviously knees and ankles too) and glute strength is key. Learn your weaknesses. Good luck, managing bunions is a journey.
